Phillip Cooke
Co-Director of the LCMG

Phillip was born in Penrith, Cumbria in 1980, spending the first 18 years of his life in the Lake District. He studied composition with Paul Archbold in Durham and with John Casken in Manchester. He has had works played across the country by the likes of Gemini, the Allegri, Lindsay and Sorrel String Quartets and the BBC NOW. He was composer in association to the Oxford Millennium Orchestra from 2003 - 2005 and had works played in France, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

He was appointed Co-Artistic Director of the LCMG in 2004, and has written three works for them: 'Jacobite', 'Intrada' and the most recent, 'Salve Regina' (performed in April 2006). He is strongly influenced by his native Lake District and by history (especially the Stuart Dynasty). His musical influences range from Britten to Schnittke and Gubaidulina; he has written an article on the Liturgical music of James MacMillan, and is currently planning an article on Sensuality and Mysticism in Howell's Canticle settings. He is married, lives in Gloucestershire, supports Everton and is studying for a PhD with Anthony Powers at Cardiff University.
