Adrian Hull
Co-Director and Principal Conductor
Adrian Hull was born in Plymouth in
1976. He read music at King’s College London and the Royal Academy
of Music; whilst there he studied composition with Silvina Milstein,
Robert Keeley and Sir Harrison Birtwistle. After several years as
a freelance musician, he returned to formal education studying for
a PhD with Anthony Powers at Cardiff University.
Adrian has written for many of the leading ensembles
across the country, including the Schubert Ensemble, Kokoro and Chroma.
He has written three works for the LCMG (Quorum (2004), The
Young Hegelian (2005) and Communicare (2007)).
Alongside his work as a composer, Adrian is active
as both a pianist and conductor; he is currently principle conductor
of the LCMG, and has recently worked with several Cardiff University
ensembles and (in workshops) with Jac van Steen and the BBC National
Orchestra of Wales. He is also an experienced MD having most recently
directed Bernstein's West Side Story.
Adrian’s music is characterised by its finely
wrought construction and incredible attention to detail; his ear for
sound and texture along with a sensual use of harmony has been noted
by many and is a hallmark of his work. He draws his inspiration from
diverse sources, quite often highlighting a sense of conflict and opposition
between two forces. Although his work is often dark-hued in nature there
is often an underlying sense of playful iconoclasm, this no doubt inherited
from his studies with Birtwistle.
Other current engagements include research into ‘Time
in Music’ from a composer's viewpoint, continued work on his book
of piano studies Octamorous Rituals, a new work being written in collaboration
with the cellist Gabriella Swallow (Three Agitations) and a
Song Cycle, The Smuggler's Banker set to a text by Jack Middleton.
